10 Habits to Help You #bGrateful

There are many things we all have to #bgrateful for: family, friends, pets, experiences, etc. One of the most critical things to give gratitude towards, is the state of your body and your mind; your Self. If we are not taking care of ourselves, then we have nothing left to give to others.

Practice giving gratitude towards your inner Self and your physical body everyday. This list of 10 straightforward habits to carry out each day should help you get started.

1. Stop Negative Self Talk

If you say cruel things to yourself that you would never say to anyone else, even your worse enemy, it’s time to stop. Learn to embrace each part of yourself, even the parts you would rather change. You only get one physical body in this lifetime - Decide to love exactly what you’ve got.

2. Exercise

Your body was designed to move. You don’t have to train for a marathon or dead lift 150 pounds, but you do need to move, every day.

3. Don’t Say YES When You Want to Say NO

Avoid saying YES to things that feel like a distraction, create feelings of resentment, or literally make you feel sick. Think about the contribution you want to make in this lifetime. Then, ask yourself, ‘would saying YES to this request support me in making that contribution? Or not?’

4. Get Enough of Sleep

Sleep is essential to your health. A deficit can compromise your immune systems, cause inflammation, lead to memory loss and weight gain, hamper reflexes and decision making skills, and increase the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and type 2 diabetes. Your body needs 7-8 hours every night to restore and reset.

5. Take Responsibility for Your Own Happiness

Don’t rely on seeking happiness from any source outside of yourself. Happiness is an inside job and a choice to take full responsibility for. You’ll never be happy with anyone else, until you are happy with yourself.

6. Don’t Take It Personally

Whatever happens around you, don't take it personally... Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. It’s helpful to remember a quote from The Four Agreements : "everyone is doing the best they can from their current state of consciousness".

7. Be Playful

Playfulness is the kinetic energy that ignites creativity and attracts more inspiration. When you remember not to take life too seriously, you avoid needless dramas when a situation requires calm. Laughing at ourselves over our limitations and our humanness — these are hallmarks of playfulness.

8. Eat Whole Foods

Two helpful ‘rules’ to eat and live by: 1)Eat foods made from ingredients you can picture in their raw state or growing in nature and 2)avoid food products that contain more than 5 ingredients. It's best to stay away from processed packaged foods, which can be difficult with today's on-the-go lifestyle. If you are in a situation you cannot avoid packaged foods, stick to items that contain ingredients your great-grandmother would recognize. (OK, that was really three!)

9. Meditate

This doesn’t have to mean sitting on a pillow in lotus, chanting ‘Om’. I meditate when on a trail run with my dog, making it a "moving meditation." The important thing is to take at least 10-15 minutes for yourself to take a walk, or just sit outside, noticing your thoughts and how you’re feeling each day.

10. Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Don’t take anything for granted. Realize your present life is a result of the actions of your past and your present actions dictate future results. Then, take on an attitude of gratitude at each moment for what you have, so you can attract peace in the present moment and abundance in the future. Try noticing one ungrateful thought you have each day and switching it around to something you can be grateful for. Eventually, those positive thoughts will become habit.
